Stockings or Stay ups?

I'm wearing the Ambra 70 denier opaque stay-ups in this picture (I don't actually need to use the suspender straps with these stockings, this is just for the look).

What is the difference between stockings, stay-ups and pantyhose?

Stockings, pantyhose and thigh highs are all made from either nylon or silk and their transparency is graded by unit of measure called a denier.

The lower the denier the more transparent the stocking and the higher the denier the more opaque.

  • Pantyhose cover you from the tip of the toe to the waist
  • Stockings cover from your toe to the top of your thigh
  • Stay-ups cover from your toe to the top of your thigh and have a silicone non-slip band to prevent them from falling down.

Stockings
Personally I prefer stockings for a boudoir look. I find stockings to be far sexier and when worn with the right outfit you can stop traffic.

One thing in particular I love about stockings is the triangle shape that is created when the suspender belt pulls the top of the stocking towards your hips. It elongates your legs and has that vintage look, reminiscent of a 1950’s house wife, which I think adds to the appeal.

The key to keeping stockings in place over a day or night, is a six to eight clip suspender belt, a four clip suspender tends to be best for looks.

Stay-ups
Stay-ups are great if you cant find a suspender belt to go with your set or if you don’t want the hassle of the straps and clips.

I wear stay-ups from time to time and I find that because I am a shorty, they can be very practical for a day at work, whereas if I am wearing suspenders and stockings, this can cause me some trouble as the straps are often too long, so I always need to take some time to alter my suspenders before I wear them.

Sometimes the silicone strip on stay-ups can become a bit uncomfortable over the length of a day and it may roll down.

OUR PICKS:

Stay ups
1. Levante
A staple in any stocking drawer, Levante covers the classic stay-ups to the fashion stay-ups.

2. Collette Dinnigan
Although this is not Collette Dinnigan’s specialty, do not overlook their stay-ups. I have found some fantastic stay-ups in her collection and they are surprisingly durable.

3. Agent Provocateur
With a new selection of colours each season you cant go wrong at Agent Provocateur. Though a little pricer than most stockings, if you are after something à la mode this is definitely the place to shop!

4. Ambra
Ambra stay-ups are my favourite because they last and last. They don't have a huge range, but I love them for the basics.

Stockings
1. Jonathan Aston
This is my number one go to for stockings. They have that classic black back seam stocking that I love so much and I buy these 3-4 packs at a time they’re that addictive.

2. What Katie Did
Perfect for that vintage look, What Katie Did do a selection of Nylon and back seam stockings in a selection of vintage looks. This selection includes the black top and back seam with nude stockings, one of my all time favourite colour combinations for stockings!

3. Leona Edmiston
Another brand just going about their clothing business who quietly has a wonderful stocking collection. Lovely detailing in some sets and a fineness in the stocking that I haven’t come across elsewhere.

 4. Agent Provocateur
I have to mention them again as they really do a great cover of stockings and stay-ups. You’ll probably find a wider colour range here than most places.

5. Columbine
This lovely brand from New Zealand stick to the basics when it comes to stockings but they certainly get it right. If you are after your classic stocking this is the place to go. It is also one of the very rare places I’ve been able to find completely nude stockings!
